Lovett's science fact article has a very long title, beginning with "Geology, Geohistory, and �Psychohistory,'" but the essence of it is the perennial debate between "uniformitarians" and "catastrophists": scholars who see history in terms of broad, long-term trends and those who see it in terms of sudden pivotal events. As usual, such a dichotomy is an oversimplification, and the truth is more like this....
